Retailers Pocketed More Than the Tariff Itself
Researchers tracked a $1.19 tariff on $5 European wine into the US market. Here's where it actually landed:
• Producers absorbed: $0.26
• Importers took a cut: $0.44
• Retailers tacked on extra margin: $1.10
Total price increase: $1.59, about 32%. The tariff was the excuse, not the cause. Retailers used it as cover to grab more than the tariff was even worth.
