Moderate Republicans myth keeps the lights on
A user on X responds to someone calling Henry Cuellar moderate by arguing there are actually tons of moderate Republicans in Congress, just not Democrats.
This is patently false. The Republican conference has collapsed into a party of Trump loyalists. The moderates either got primaried out, retired, or folded into the MAGA machinery. There are maybe a handful left, and they vote the party line anyway. Cuellar at least breaks ranks consistently.
The myth of moderate Republicans serves one function: it lets the press and establishment Democrats pretend the parties are equivalent when one of them has turned into an authoritarian movement.
Yes Henry Cuellar is obviously a moderate But he's one of only a small handful of actually moderate Democrats in congress Meanwhile there are tons of moderate Republicans in congress That's the point that I'm trying to make
