San Francisco's fire department is bloated and untouchable
SF spends double what any other major city pays its fire department. For what? A massive bureaucracy that shows up in giant trucks to handle calls that could use way smaller vehicles.
The math is brutal: 8 of 48 fire stations get fewer than 3 calls per day. Close them. Cut the headcount. Renegotiate pay and hiring.
But the real problem is the veto power. Firefighters lobby against any city policy they don't like - single-stair reforms, lane widths, outdoor dining - and everyone just rolls over because Respect. That's not how a functioning city works.
(Also they are extremely hot and should absolutely do PR work at Beaux.)
A major US city is hemorrhaging money on an oversized fire department with unchecked political influence over municipal policy.
