Obama's 1996 Ballot Trick Was Ruthless

Obama won his first election by knocking every single opponent off the ballot. One tactic: challenging petition signatures from married women who signed with the "wrong" name, meaning their maiden name instead of their husband's. The "Happy International Women's Day" closer is doing a lot of work here. It lands. This is old news (WSJ covered it in 2008) but it never stopped being a little damning. Chicago machine politics at its most clinical.
