The panopticon thing is real. An omniscient god who judges your every thought is not a comfort, it's a surveillance state you can never log out of. The cheerful group accountability stuff makes total sense once you understand that the whole architecture of belief requires constant self-monitoring under an invisible eye that never blinks. It's not a bug. It's the feature.
