Chinese leaders' lifespans had nothing to do with virtue
A saying making the rounds: Zhou Enlai only drank, didn't smoke, died at 77. Mao Zedong only smoked, rarely drank, died at 83. Deng Xiaoping drank and smoked, died at 93. Zhang Xueliang drank, smoked, used opium, frequented prostitutes, lived past 100.
The punchline writes itself. Whatever moral calculus you're building about habits and lifespan just collapsed.
Former Chinese warlord Zhang Xueliang, who led the Northeastern Army from 1928 to 1936, dies of pneumonia in exile in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was 100.
