US votes alone against fixing map projection
The UN General Assembly voted to replace the Mercator projection (which grotesquely inflates wealthy nations and shrinks Africa) with an accurate one. Every country voted yes. Except the US.
The Trump admin's official position: this resolution "mocks the work and purpose of this institution" and is a "barnacle" destroying UN credibility. Voting no on cartographic accuracy is apparently where institutional integrity lives.
One country alone held out against basic geography because admitting the old map was wrong feels like ideological surrender.
General Assembly to vote on a resolution that will replace the Mercator map of the globe for one that accurately presents Africa's size. The US, in remarks before the vote, said it will vote no on the resolution as "it mocks the work and purpose of this institution." "Resolutions like this one and the ideological agenda they promote are barnacles on our work here, and the reason this institution is losing its credibility. When the United Nations questions why it is losing legitimacy in the world and is not taken seriously time and again, we point to resolutions such as this." BUT the draft resolution was adopted, and the US was the lone no vote.
