Federal court nukes $31.8M cannabis contract judgment
Michigan grower Hello Farms won $31.8M from a jury when Curaleaf backed out of a harvest purchase deal. Federal court just erased it. Their reasoning: cannabis is federally illegal, so contracts aren't enforceable, even in states where it's legal.
Hello Farms is pushing for a rehearing. Their lawyer, Neal Katyal (former acting Solicitor General), says the ruling would create "unimaginable instability" in legal markets.
This exposes the absurd limbo legal cannabis operates in: states say go, feds say no contract for you.
