"Low-Tax Texas" Is a Scam for Everyone But the Rich

The "no income tax" pitch is one of the great political cons of our time. Working-class Texans pay MORE in taxes than their California counterparts. Middle class breaks roughly even. The only people who actually win are the wealthy, who pay significantly less. The mechanism is simple: no income tax gets replaced by brutal property taxes and regressive sales taxes, which hit lower earners hardest. The rich own assets, not wages, so they come out ahead. Everyone else gets told they're living in a low-tax paradise while getting fleeced.

6 years of living in Texas and I've come to the conclusion that the no state income tax thing is basically a scam. The property taxes are so high that they negate any savings. We are still paying as many taxes in Texas as we would in California. You save on gas I guess.

The red state "no income tax" myth redistributes the tax burden downward, protecting the wealthy while working-class residents pay more than they would in supposedly high-tax blue states.
