Gorsuch's birthright citizenship split: illegals' kids actually safer

Gorsuch's dissent on birthright citizenship reveals a weird crack in the conservative majority. He'd strip citizenship from kids of tourists but preserve it for children of undocumented immigrants who've actually lived here. On whether illegal immigrants' kids are citizens, that's closer to 7-2 than the headlines suggest. The logic is oddly consistent: he cares about permanence and rootedness. Doesn't make it right, but it's a softer position than the supposed 6-3 conservative bulldozer.
