Anthropic pressured Vatican to endorse AI personhood
The Anthropic crew apparently lobbied hard to get the Vatican to alter "Magnifica Humanitas" before release so it wouldn't deny AI personhood. That's not a think tank defending its research. That's an organization with enough leverage to lean on the Catholic Church on theology.
This tracks with the broader pattern: Anthropic positions itself as the responsible AI company, but it's still an AI company trying to engineer societal acceptance of what it builds. The Vatican statement was framed as independent moral authority. Turns out it came with strings attached.
Note well, apparently Anthropic tried very hard to get the Vatican to alter the text of "Magnifica Humanitas" just prior to its release so that it would not deny AI personhood.
