California AB-1043 is written so broadly it technically applies to every operating system, including a volunteer-run DOS clone from 1994. FreeDOS can't comply. There's no mechanism in any DOS to do age verification. So now the team is floating the same thing some Linux distros are considering: a banner telling California users not to download it. "The consensus is there's no way for DOS (any DOS) to meet [California law] AB-1043 because no DOS has the mechanisms to do that. I know some Linux distributions are discussing the option of putting a notice on their website to the effect of 'if you live in California, you should not use this because of AB-1043.' That sucks, but that's also a path we've talked about too, mainly because we don't have a Foundation to cover us, we're just a group of volunteer developers." Legislators wrote a law with zero technical literacy and now unpaid open-source volunteers are the ones eating the consequences.
