Mamdani's 5 ballot props gut public process
Mayor Mamdani released his 2026 ballot propositions. Here's what he's really doing:
Prop 1: Axe public hearings and newspaper notices for outdoor dining permits. Replace councilmember veto with agency sign-off. Cut timeline from 8 months to 2.
Prop 2: Kill mandatory contractor hearings. Let the mayor's office hand approvals to agencies through written consent only.
Prop 3: Remove DOT's requirement to consult NYPD and FDNY on street safety, bus lanes, and bike infrastructure. Trash the ULURP process for city land sales.
Prop 4: Consolidate all permitting into one system, move waterfront jurisdiction from DEP to DOB, rename borough superintendents.
Prop 5: Mandate 12% rainy day reserves unless there's "compelling fiscal need" (which means whenever he wants to spend it).
The pattern is clear: kill transparency requirements, hand power to unelected agency heads, strip community input from decisions that affect neighborhoods directly. Efficiency theater masking a power grab.
