IMAX CEO admits they haven't made projectors in 50 years
Richard Gelfond, the guy supposedly running IMAX, just casually revealed they haven't manufactured new film projectors since the 1970s. Their entire strategy is retrofitting and rebuilding old equipment while hoping demand will somehow justify the infrastructure gap. That's not innovation, that's hospice care for a dying format dressed up as optimization.
Will we see more IMAX 70mm screens in the U.S. after #TheOdyssey? "There's certainly more demand, the problem is they haven't made new IMAX film projectors in about 50 years," says IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond. "So we retrofit them, rebuild them and part of our strategy is to see how far we can take it. But certainly, demand-driven, I'd like to see more."
The CEO running IMAX cinema's expansion is admitting the company has zero manufacturing capacity for its core product.
