The Squanto Story Destroys American Mythology

By the time the Pilgrims showed up, Squanto had already lived in England for 9 years, returned to America, got captured and shipped to Spain, lived in Malaga for 4 more years, and then came back again. The man was a multilingual, baptized Catholic who had more passport stamps than most people alive today. He likely crossed paths with Pocahontas in London. Because the Virginia settlers had been there so long that was just... possible. American history class presents Plymouth like it was the opening scene. It was not. It was a very late, very provincial footnote in a story already decades deep.

The real story of Squanto is a total demolition of the sanitized Pilgrim myth that American schools still teach as origin story.
