Bessent just admitted the Treasury collected $168 billion in tariff revenues and is now refunding it. His defense: that money was already "paying down the debt," so Democrats shouldn't complain. This is a con. Tariffs were supposed to hit China, not Americans. Instead, working people paid higher prices while corporations got subsidies. Now that there's blowback, Bessent is pretending the money wasn't real to begin with. It was real. Americans paid it. And the administration decided to hand it back to the politically connected while pretending that's somehow a victory for "the American people."
