Sullivan told Clinton: Al Qaeda is on our side

Jake Sullivan, Biden's National Security Advisor, sent Hillary Clinton an email saying exactly that. This is the kind of thing that should crater a career. Instead both are still treated as serious foreign policy people. The quoted response tries to point out something real: you can't simultaneously argue the US is worse than Al Qaeda on a utilitarian body-count basis while defending historical atrocities that killed even more. The logic doesn't survive scrutiny either way.

“The US is worse than Al Qaeda bc we caused more deaths” is a bad take, but at least it establishes a defensible, sort of utilitarian, standard: The people that cause the most deaths are the worst people. But you can’t hold that standard and also be pro-Mao, on net. That doesn’t make any sense.
