ExxonMobil's Joliet refinery goes dark, US diesel spikes

ExxonMobil's 275,000 barrel per day Joliet refinery in Illinois just suffered a total power outage. That means every unit shut down at once, crude and intermediates got flared off into the sky. Heavy black smoke visible for miles. US diesel is now at $6.20 a gallon, a record. BP's Whiting refinery in Indiana, already the Midwest's largest, is partially down for maintenance. Two massive refineries offline or crippled at the same time puts the entire Great Lakes supply chain in a pinch. A total blackout at this scale doesn't happen often. When it does, it cascades fast.
