FAA rolled out untested AI system without consulting controllers
Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) says air traffic controllers in the DC area weren't consulted on the FAA's SMART system design and received no training before it went live at Reagan and Dulles.
The system is unproven. Controllers are operating it blind. And Beyer is demanding the FAA suspend it immediately until safety validation actually happens.
This is what happens when an agency lets vendors dictate safety protocols instead of the people running the equipment.
The FAA should not use my constituents as guinea pigs for an unproven AI air traffic control system that has Americans’ lives in its hands. I’m calling on the FAA to immediately suspend use of this AI system at Washington area airports until its safety has been established. My full statement:
