Democrats now calling trans women men in ads
A Democratic candidate in Iowa is running on "opposing letting men in women's locker rooms" - meaning trans women. The Iowa Dem ticket has abandoned the whole bathroom fight entirely, conceded the issue to Republicans so they can focus elsewhere.
Republicans are hitting them anyway, pointing out they voted against the 2023 GOP gender bill. So capitulating doesn't buy credibility. Just signals which way the wind is blowing.
Dave Weigel's question is obvious: how many other Dems follow suit before November?
Obviously Gaines isn't going to take the W here, but it's a gender critical W: This is a Dem in a +4 Trump seat (which Dems held from 2019-2023) saying she "oppose[s] letting men in women's locker rooms." Rs aren't letting them get credit for that position, pointing out that they voted against the 2023 omnibus GOP gender bill. Trans rights groups saw that coming: Change your position and you'll get hit anyway. But significant that the Dem ticket in Iowa (inc Sand and Turek) have abandoned the bathroom bill/locker room fight and conceded the issue to Rs so they can focus on something else. https://www.iowapublicradio.org/state-government-news/2023-03-22/iowa-transgender-kids-are-now-barred-from-getting-gender-affirming-care-and-using-certain-school-bathrooms
