SF redevelopment trades height for volume. 58 more apartments, same footprint, lower skyline. 86 of them actually affordable. New Safeway replaces the old one people pretend they'll miss. The math is backwards from what usually happens: developers usually fight down density to build up taller. These guys did it sideways. Whether that's actual progress or just a different flavor of gentrification depends entirely on whether those 86 affordable units actually stay affordable or if that number becomes funny in five years.
