Gloria Steinem founded the Independent Research Service, CIA-funded, to spread anti-communist propaganda at youth festivals abroad. When exposed in 1967, she confirmed it to the New York Times without apology, claiming the CIA is "liberal, nonviolent, and honorable" and she'd do it again. The movement got subverted away from class analysis. History gets rewritten, icons get cleaned up, and the CIA's actual record of violence disappears from the story we're told about them. That's the legacy being sanitized right now.
