Rep. Randy Fine says mass deportation is how you fight inflation. His theory: immigrants drive up demand, so slash the population and prices fall. This isn't economics, it's scapegoating dressed up in supply-and-demand language. Inflation is a monetary and supply issue tied to post-pandemic fiscal policy and corporate pricing power. Immigrants don't cause it. But blaming a vulnerable group is politically simpler than explaining why the Fed's 2022-2023 rate hikes didn't crater prices or why corporations kept margins fat even as input costs fell. "The only way we will ever get prices down is to reduce demand for products. And the largest source of demand that we have in this country that we should not have is illegal immigrants." Fine is either lying or economically illiterate. Probably both.
