Pope says AI art lacks the spark
The pope just went on record drawing a hard line between human art and machine generation. His actual point: algorithms are statistical pattern-matching on stolen images, not creation. There's an ontological difference before you even get to aesthetic quality.
He's calling for the Church to team up with actual artists and cultural institutions to "safeguard our humanity." It's not wrong, especially when every AI company is desperately trying to legitimize their products as just another form of expression. The Church knows the difference between making something and regurgitating data.
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
