The Navy just finished a 6-year, multibillion-dollar overhaul of USS George Washington in 2023. Refueled the nuclear reactors, modernized systems, refurbished everything. The ship's now sailing to relieve USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East, and sailors are already posting pictures of destroyed toilets and broken showers. This is after the Navy itself admitted quality-of-life problems on this same ship during the overhaul. And Abraham Lincoln, the ship it's replacing, has been run into the ground by an absurdly extended deployment where its crew's already complained about plumbing, sanitation, and living conditions. Second consequence: George Washington was the only U.S. carrier in the western Pacific. Its departure leaves that entire region without carrier presence. The Navy has completely lost the plot on carrier management. You spend billions refitting a ship and it still arrives broken. Your force is so overextended that exhausted crews get replaced by equally miserable crews. The military readiness gap isn't just a budget problem anymore, it's a competence problem.
