Carl Paladino, a New York political figure, is demanding that Zohran Mamdouh, the Muslim NYC mayor, not attend the 9/11 memorial ceremony, calling it "sacred ground" where he "does not belong." Mamdouh was 9 years old when 9/11 happened. The framing here is pure religious prejudice. You'd think from the way these people talk about him that he was involved in the attack itself. This is textbook Islamaphobia dressed up as patriotism.
