DOJ sues California over noncitizen ballots

The Trump administration's DOJ filed an emergency federal court action this morning demanding California sequester ballots from suspected noncitizens after the state refused a 48-hour demand to review and flag more than 20,000 voters who were mailed live ballots. The filing invokes 18 U.S.C. 611, which makes noncitizen voting in federal elections a criminal offense. The statement claims this is apolitical, which tells you everything: a politically charged move gets framed as neutral law enforcement. California hasn't said publicly why it refused the demand, but this is a classic Trump escalation playbook. Make an unrealistic demand, cry foul when refused, sue for emergency relief, and drive the news cycle with threats of electoral sabotage.
