NYC Buildings Gutted Their Own Staircases for Retail

Retail space on Fulton St was so valuable, and upper floors so worthless, that landlords literally demolished the internal staircases to squeeze out every inch of ground-level square footage. The floors above didn't disappear. They just became permanently unreachable. Bricked in. Boarded up. Dead weight sitting on top of prime real estate. Capitalism optimizing a building into a stump.
