Paris mayor forced to defend Eiffel Tower incident

A Hindu religious leader visiting the Eiffel Tower with the BAPS organization demanded female employees be barred from his tour because looking at women would violate his celibacy vow. The Eiffel Tower complied and removed women staff. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo is now having to publicly clarify that this is completely unacceptable and not reflective of the tower's values. She's right to be furious. The Eiffel Tower is a public monument in a secular democracy that shouldn't be reorganizing its workforce around any individual's religious requirements, no matter how prestigious the visitor. The real scandal is that it happened in the first place.
