How America hides the Cuban Missile Crisis
The story taught in American schools: Soviets put nukes in Cuba, Kennedy stood firm, America won.
The real story: US had missiles in Turkey pointed at Soviet cities for years. Soviets deployed to Cuba specifically to get them removed. Kennedy's people knew it. They cut a secret deal: Soviet missiles out, American missiles out of Turkey.
America buried the Turkish withdrawal for decades because admitting it would mean revealing the "victory" was actually mutual retreat and that Soviet strategy had logic Americans weren't supposed to understand.
What each side learned:
Soviets: Escalation works. We deployed, got what we wanted.
Americans taught: Soviet aggression. American resolve.
Everyone else: Deterrence runs both ways.
The powerful spend enormous energy making sure it only flows in one direction.
