City Hall blocks judge over Maxwell connection
Press Secretary Joe Calvello says Mayor Mamdani rejected one appointee, John Leventhal, specifically because he worked on Ghislane Maxwell's legal team. Calvello also points out Mamdani has appointed Jewish judges, responding to bar associations accusing the administration of excluding Jews from the judiciary advisory committee.
The response sidesteps the actual allegation by focusing on one disqualification, which is theater. Whether the pattern exists across the rest of the appointments is what matters, not one vetting failure dressed up as proof of diversity.
A coalition of New York City’s Jewish bar associations is accusing Mamdani of excluding Jews from his new Advisory Committee on the Judiciary. In a letter, the attorneys say the omission follows a “troubling pattern” that has left many Jewish New Yorkers feeling marginalized. A City Hall official said that retired Appellate Division Justice John Leventhal mentioned in the letter “did not pass our vetting process.”
